Weather on the Outer Banks can change quickly. Over my 8 plus years of shooting Outer Banks family photos, I’ve learned that even if rain and thunderstorms are not in the forecast, they can pop up instantly. There have been times where there has been 0% chance of rain on the radar and it’s suddenly monsooning on my head right before a session. What happens in this situation? We typically wait it out and it quickly passes and then make a decision.

For the Bennett Family, there was no chance of rain in the forecast on their scheduled session day. But as you can see, a storm popped up in Kill Devil Hills, one town over, and loomed in the background for the entire session threatening to end the session prematurely. The temperature dropped, the wind started whipping but we rolled on and pulled off a beautiful session with a moody sky.

The Bennett boys were a hoot to photograph! They had the most handsome smiles, craziest silly faces and quickest feet. There is something about Jockey’s Ridge and boys (of all ages). Once they see the wide open space, it’s an open invitation to run wide open, tuck and roll down the hills and get loads of sand in every crevice. And you know what? That’s totally okay! IF I keep them still the whole time during the session, it’s torturous to them and I’m not about that. As a Mom of FIVE kids, I’m skilled at the art of give and take, smiling and silly, rolling and sitting. It works in my favor every single time! I LOVE the personality that these two sweet boys showed during their Outer Banks family photos session!

One of the perks of shooting at Jockey’s Ridge is the close proximity to the beach. Although Jockey’s Ridge is on the sound side and across the highway, it’s one stop light away from a beach access which allows us to be able to photograph part of the session at Jockey’s Ridge and then finish up by the ocean. The sky really started to show off during the last 15 minutes of our session.

Huge thank you to the Bennett family and Mom, Lisa, for allowing me to photograph your sweet family! I hope to see you guys again soon! Believe it or not, if you are looking for a professional photographer to capture your family this summer at the Outer Banks, it is not too soon to start planning. My summer schedule fills up three months in advance so let’s connect now!
